Are you rubbing Toxins on your baby's skin?

Are Your Baby Products Safe? More than half of children’s bath soaps, shampoos, lotions, and other personal care products tested by the group Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CSC) were found to contain 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde, according to a recent report. Did you know that the European union has banned 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde from cosmetic and skin care products?

Here is what is scary: There are no restrictions on allowable levels of the chemicals in baby care products in North America. Parents, there isn't any way to tell how much of these chemicals are being applied to your baby's skin because the law does not require the companies to put labels or warnings on the product labels of the highly toxic and carcinogenic chemicals. Formaldehyde can also cause skin rashes in sensitive children.

As with many chemicals of concern used in cosmetics and skin care, the companies that make these products argue that it's "just a little bit" of 1,4-dioxane in the baby shampoo. Unfortunately, the same baby may be exposed to 1,4-dioxane from the bubble bath, the shampoo, the body wash and many other sources in the same day. While a single product might not be cause for concern, the reality is that babies may be exposed to several products at bath time, several times a week, in addition to other chemical exposures in the home and environment. Those small exposures add up and may contribute to later-life disease.

Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide are thought to be two of the safest sunscreens. Instead of being absorbed into the skin (and other body organs) to react to ultraviolet light so that the skin does not burn, as chemical sunscreens do, they keep the light from penetrating the skin in the first place. They are mechanical, instead of chemical, barriers to UV light.
